I can’t believe (no, not an ad for butter!) that September has rolled around already. However the evenings and early mornings are getting a little chilly and my guys are starting to lose their summer coats – moulting everywhere and especially when I’m wearing a dark coloured top! Funny that …

The weather in the past few weeks has been quite bizarre – at least the grass is starting to grow and what looked like a desert at the beginning of the month is now green and muddy. Rugs are going on and coming off and going on again like crazy and it is a daily question of ‘do I or don’t I’. The mare is big and a huge wimp so she is being rugged up every night and if it seems slightly cooler (or windy) she is keeping it on during the day. Bryan hates his rug unless it is really necessary so is always happy to rough it and the new guy seems to suffer from sweat induced pimples if he gets too hot in a rug – so he is still naked (but he does come in at night so he is a pampered boy)!

Good luck to all HWRC members who will be competing for the Club at Lincoln on 11/12th September, at the British Riding Clubs National Championships, competing against riders from the entire United Kingdom.

Future Events …..

Open Hunter Trials – 19th September at Rosehill – send off your entries now!
Juniors, Pairs, Novice and Open Classes will be featured at this ever popular event at Rosehill. The schedule for this is on the web-site – if you have problems downloading it then get in touch with Anne (Belbin) on 07958 597305 or Jan (01494 882041).

Helpers are needed (as always) for fence judging, tack checking, etc and if you can spare the day or half a day then please call Anne Belbin on 07958 597305. It really is good fun to fence judge or help out generally at these events, you get lunch and drinks provided free, a £5.00 HWRC voucher to use at any of our events in the next 12 months and points towards a trophy! What have you got to lose?

AGM – 19th October at Lane End Village Hall – 8pm start
Everyone welcome, even non-members. This is where your opinions can be voiced and the Committee members are elected for the following year.
The fun stuff is watching (and receiving) the prizes and trophies that are handed out to all the team members and HWRC members who have been nominated, by the Committee, as particularly deserving of a specific award. These trophies vary from the junior and senior members who have gained the highest number of points during the year to the most improved rider and also for the most improved horse, etc….. In all there are 10 trophies to be given out – who knows maybe you will be going home with one. The only way to find out is to turn up!

Open Indoor Jumping Show – 14th November at BCA
Classes for all abilities catered for, from beginners to open and, as always, our fabulous, fat, four tiered rosettes are awarded to 10th place.

Schedules will be available on-line and from the usual outlets in early October.

Open Indoor Hunter Trials – 28th November at BCA
This will be judged as a two-phase competition over rustic jumps in the arena and classes will include Pairs, Novice, Intermediate and Open jumping and times will be allocated to the competitors. This is always a very popular event so grab the schedule when it is out (early October) and make sure you get your entry in to ensure a place.

Junior Show – 22nd August at Black Barn Farm
It did not rain – the going was near perfect after the wet weather earlier on and by 10am the trailers and horse-boxes started to roll in. Some of the classes were a little low on numbers but in the showing classes it meant that the judges were able to spend time with the competitors and give the riders (and their parents) guidance on what to do (and what not to) in the showing ring.

Thanks go to all who helped with the set up on Saturday, gave up their Sundays to be at the show and especially to those that stayed behind at the end to put all the jumps, fillers and posts away in their containers. Thanks also to Chris Baylis (and Sarah Metcalfe) for allowing the club to hold the show on his ground.

Proceeds from the Clear Round were £60 and will be donated to Thames Valley Air Ambulance – thank you to everyone who took part in this fund raiser.

Bridleways in Bucks – can you help??

For those of you who hack out, a network of good bridleways is very crucial. Alison (Clayton) is the BHS Bridleways Officer for this area and also a HWRC Committee member and she kindly gave me permission to include the following article in this bulletin…………….

“I’m the Bucks BHS Bridleways Officer and currently looking at public footpaths that could be upgraded to public bridleways in the Bucks area. Bucks County Council (BCC) are interested in helping us to join the fragmented public bridleway network.

If you know of any potential public footpaths that could be upgraded, can you send me the information and also let me know if you are able to take on the work needed to achieve this. Some information from BCC about the process of upgrading a public footpath.

• We are always pleased to hear about ways in which our fragmented bridleway network can be improved, and links identified.

• We support modifications of footpaths to bridleways, where appropriate, and need to consider all proposals individually. Each modification would need the agreement of the landowner - have you had any contact with the landowners along the footpaths to find out whether they would be supportive? We would also need local and parish support for the modification?
• In looking at whether the modification would be appropriate/possible, we would need to look at required widths, surfacing, fencing requirements etc. The legal side in terms of drawing up the definitive map modification order is something that our definitive map team would guide us through.

• Any works required 'on the ground' will need costing up and funding sources identified.

We find that approaches to landowners by local users or parish councils, who may already have a good relationship with the landowner, can often assist in progressing proposals such as these.
Unfortunately I can’t take on all of the possible upgrades, as a volunteer I also work full time and I’m only one person! but I will be happy to provide help where I can “.

A Note from the Chairman………….
Golly, it’s been some crazy sort of weather recently. If any of you ventured out to Bucks County Show last Thursday, you too would have been swimming in the mud! It wasn’t just mud but really loose slurry that got deeper and deeper as the day wore on. 10 tractors were towing the lorries and trailers in the gateway and of course, out again at the end of the day. The depth of the mud near the lorry entrance got to about 15 inches or more, so tractor was the only way. Thankfully, grass and ground do recover quite quickly, but I bet the landowner wasn’t overly pleased!

The public car park actually wasn’t too bad by going home time as the sun had ventured out and tempted to dry things up a bit. But certainly the number of spectators were vastly down on previous years. I think both keeping one’s money in one’s pocket plus the dreadful weather were much to blame. Horse entries were also down on last year. Working on the British Horse Society stand, we had a good view of the showing rings and the pony classes were but a fraction of the normal entry level. It’s such a shame when it’s just a one-day show – no matter what the level (County or local show) as it costs so much to put on a show and if the entries and the spectators aren’t there, it really hits the coffers.

This may have slipped your minds, but we did need the photos by end of August please. You can contact Irene on theharper.family@tiscali.co.uk to e-mail your photos to her. Marj Herring, our Secretary, has already started working on the actual calendar part and is now ready to include the photos. Having spoken to one or two of you, I know you have some piccies you’ve been meaning to send, so please can you let Irene have them pronto?

Thames Valley Air Ambulance
We sent a cheque to the Air Ambulance from the proceeds of the Clear Round ring at our July Open Show and we received such a lovely letter in return. They probably get so many letters etc but in the letter to me, they even remembered Laura (Salisbury) and sent her their best wishes for a full recovery. We shall also be sending them the proceeds from the Clear Round ring at our Junior Show in August. Not so much, sadly, but as they say, every little helps them to continue doing the wonderful and lifesaving work that they do. Equestrians particularly should be grateful to them as they manage to get to the places that normal road ambulances can’t get to.

Helpers – our sincere thanks
I would like to thank all those members who have turned up to help us over the summer months at our shows etc. There’s always so much that needs doing and rarely enough people to do them. So when you offer your help, you are guaranteeing that the event can go ahead. If no one turns up to help, there can be no show. Marj, our Secretary, has been very nifty giving out the £5 vouchers to all the helpers, but if you have helped us and haven’t received a voucher, do please let us know.

We are not a rich Club, but we do feel strongly that those members who help us should be thanked in a realistic way, and giving out the Vouchers, which can be used against entry fees etc, hopefully help to say thank you in a positive way.

Holiday time once again – and the roads are blissfully empty which means that I can get to the yard at anytime of the day. When schools are working I have to either leave at about 7.30am or wait until after 9.00am to manage to get onto the A40 within 20 minutes – during holiday time the whole journey to the yard only takes 10 mins........ I would consider a push bike but a) it is mostly uphill to start and b) carrying bits of tack and carrots might be a problem.

We have a new look website – thanks to Jan’s son Paul, over here for a few weeks visit from his home in Australia. The new site is much easier to get around and you no longer have to type in our full name – hwrc.org will get you there! Hopefully this improved site will be much more interactive and user friendly for our members and hopefully we won’t have the problems again with being hacked and not being able to download our schedules. This caused a huge problem for our Open Show last month.

Junior Show & Gymkhana – 22^nd August at Black Barn Farm

Again all the money from Clear Round will be donated to the Thames Valley Air Ambulance.

Prizes galore for this show too with contributions from Allen & Page, Elaine Barbour Photography, Dobbins Clobber, Gommes Feeds and many more ………. Lots of brilliant classes for those 17 and under in showing, jumping and the gymkhana classes with rosettes to 10^th place and a large bronze horse statue for the overall points winner and a smaller statue for the runner up!

Open Horse Show – 18^th July at Black Barn Farm

It didn’t rain! The sky clouded over occasionally but, apart from a couple of drips early on, the day was dry! Although the pre-entries were a bit on the low side, early on in the morning lots of you turned up, entered the classes and took part – so the Open Show can be classed as a resounding success.

We had some fabulous prizes to give away from companies like Shires, Battles, Dobson & Horrell, Allen & Page, NAF, Global Herbs, Penn Equine, Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre, Edwards Saddlery and AmTrust Equine Insurance – and our winners went away happy and the HWRC winners also took home a trophy each. Thank you to all our sponsors who donated prizes and Dobbins Clobber who kindly sponsored the Clear Round – the proceeds of which were collected in aid of Thames Valley Air Ambulance. We have been able to send them a cheque for £149.00, so thank you to everyone who did a round to help the cause.

We were all absolutely delighted to see Laura Salisbury back on her horse. She entered the small Novice and Intermediate jumping classes and came an amazing 2^nd in both classes! Huge cheers went up from all around when she went clear, even from those who don’t actually know Laura. The news soon spread that she was back on a horse and many crowded round the ring to see how she did. There were a few misty eyes too!! Well done Laura. There are a couple of photos on the new website of Laura on the day.

British Riding Clubs National Outdoor Show Jumping Qualifier – 25^th July at Wellington RC

This was a qualifier for both London & South East Championships in October and also for the National Championships at Lincoln in September.

Lucy Chappell won her class as an individual and the Open Team won their jumping class as well. Congratulations to all who took part – I know for some it was a very long day with the first class before 9am and the 2^nd round for the last class not taking place until after 4.30pm! Luckily it didn’t rain and wasn’t exceedingly hot – but still those of you who were there all day (and your drivers/grooms) should consider yourselves as heroes (or heroines!) and that includes Sarah Metcalfe who organised our teams.

Open Unaffiliated Show Jumping – 1^st August at Black Barn Farm – cancelled due to very hard ground

HWRC Camp – by Emma Marsden

Well it is the end of April, it can only mean one thing CAMP!! For the third year running we encamped to Aston-le-Walls for another 2 day camp. The Taylors never cease to amaze me with there generosity. At the excellent demonstration on Friday evening, Cava was served which along with the BBQ was a good start to proceedings!

Saturday - good weather - AGAIN! We have been so lucky with the weather! Cross country and Dressage day! Everyone had a fab time tackling the fences under Nigel's expert instruction! Unfortunately, I spent a little too much time seeing how effective my back protector was as Paddy was having a wonderful game at my expense! Dressage was under Russell's instruction - he really has become a real favourite with HWRC Campers and comes back especially for us each year. His sympathetic approach won him many fans. Then after freshen up (me in particular, as I had half of the Aston turf up my jumper) we hit the PUB! A lovely meal and then everyone was ready for the next day!

Sunday - it's raining - WHAT!? I didn't order this! Luckily, just a drizzle. Show jumping and 'whatever you want to do ' day! Everyone had a good show jumping lesson and then decided what they'd like to do. Some more XC or just go for hack. Unfortunately, camp then came to an end again. It is exhausting, but so much fun to have a horsey weekend, with likeminded people who just want to enjoy themselves. Roll on 2011!!!

A Note from the Chairman………….

Shows and Events

It has been sad to see so many shows and events being cancelled or poorly attended this season, due to hard ground, lack of helpers and more generally, lack of entries. I have spoken to quite a few trades people who have said that attendance at the shows has been so poor that they have taken very little money and it hasn’t been worth their while turning up. My visit to Thame County Show last week bore this out with only 3’s, 5’s and 6’s in the horse showing rings. If a County Show only has this number of entries, then it’s hardly surprising that local shows are suffering. My feeling is that we’ve just got to hang on in there and hope that the next two years will see numbers rising again, but my fear is that once organisers stop running their shows, they won’t bother running them again, and this will be a great loss to local riders.

Livery Yard Owners/Managers Forum Thursday 12^th August starting at 7.30pm

Once again, the local BHS Committee has organised a Livery Yard Forum for owners and managers. This will be held at the Horse Trust, Speen Rest Home for Horses, and will start at 7.30pm. There will also be a rug and tack sale there starting at 6.30pm. The topics this time will be essential Insurance Cover for Yards plus Risk Assessments and Fire Risks. We had over 60 people last time we ran this event in December, so hope for another good turnout. Many who came were amazed at what the law says should be in place, as they just didn’t realise it meant yards like theirs. The event is free. If your yard owner/manager would like to come, please tell them to come along.

The new website

As Ann has already said, HWRC has a new website. Our original site had served us well – until it was hacked into and prevented the downloading of schedules, especially for our Open Show. My son, Paul, happened to be here at the time on a visit from his home in Australia and he offered to build a new site for us that would be totally secure from hackers. Paul was in at the start of HWRC and was both a Committee Member and Team Member in all the disciplines when he was 17 – 19 years, before he went off to University. He also designed our horse head logo all those 21 years ago! Now 36 and with his own business in Sydney, he was pleased to be back involved with the Club, if only for a short while.

Emma Marsden is still going to be our webmaster but will be joined by Bryony Harper, so they will manage the site together. They’ve both had a 3 ½ hour session with Paul so they know what to do now to keep it fresh and hopefully, exciting. There’s also a video section on there, so all you You Tubers can get the two girls to put your films on there for us all to enjoy! This site will do just about everything and as the girls get used to it, it should be possible to pay for entries online and update your own membership details. It has endless opportunities – we just need to move with the times to keep up with it!

Laura Salisbury

As already mentioned, we were all so delighted to see Laura back in the saddle at our Open Show. What a plucky girl she is, after all she has been through. Her Mum, Pauline, also has to be congratulated for all she has done to support Laura and be with her day in, day out, through all those weeks in hospital and the convalescence at home. She must be almost on her knees with exhaustion, but has still been riding in our teams. What a lady! An experienced judge, she will be judging the older youngsters classes at our Junior Show too.

We still need some helpers please for our Junior Show on Sunday 22^nd August. All of you who can’t compete because you are Seniors, we are hoping you will be willing to offer your help. We’ll need help on the day before in the afternoon to move the jumps into position in the jumping rings, and on the day to help with the Clear Round ring, to be a steward for the Judge in the tiddlies showing ring, and in the Secretaries tent taking entries. Please could you also help to put all the jumps away at the end of the show on Sunday for the winter? Just as a note, the showground field gate isn’t usually open except when the show is on. Working party Helpers need to go through the farmyard gate at Black Barn Farm which are the two black wooden gates before you get to the showground gate. These tall wooden gates are kept shut to stop the dogs and chickens going out on to the road.

Hopefully you will remember us telling you that we are going to produce a calendar for next year which will feature photos of our members/horse/dogs etc. We asked you to send your piccies to Irene Harper electronically and the winning selection will be chosen by our President, Lord Parmoor. I understand that Laura is back in the saddle and planning what events she will be doing later on this year – this means that Team Salisbury are back and raring to go!

Good news on that weird irish horse of mine – he has suddenly got the idea that water comes from the trough – he does, however, think it quite fun to try and drink the water as it is coming out of the inlet pipe. He and Bryan – another weird irish horse – have learned to take the cover off the bit with the ball-cock in, makes drinking a more fun experience!

This is so that we can say a proper and supportive ‘thank you’ to the Air Ambulance for their care of Laura on the day of her accident.

As this is HWRC’s 21^st Birthday year this Show (and the Junior Show) will be somewhat special and already we have received some fabulous gifts from top name suppliers that will be offered as prizes in some (if not all) of the classes. Goodies have been received from Shires, Battles, Global Herbs, AmTrust Insurance, Penn Equine Feed & Tack, Wendover Heights, Joules, NAF, Dobson & Horrell, Edwards Saddlery, etc, etc ……. So come along, compete and nab a fab prize!

As always we have classes to suit all levels in showing and jumping – including the C&T R 2010 qualifiers and AmTrust/RWHS 2011 qualifiers. The schedules will be available on-line and at the usual outlets closer to the day.

Helpers for set-up on Saturday and on the day are needed. If you are competing, you might still be able to offer just a couple of hours – this could give cover to someone who has been there all day and is in need of food, drink and loo break! You do not need to be a member to help so bring your yard-buddies along or even non-horsey friends are quite welcome…….

There a lots of roles such as Stewards and writers plus help clearing up after the show and it really is good fun ( you also get free food and drink!). Many hands make light work!! Festival of the Hunter Championships – 5^th/6^th June Aston le Walls (by Bryony Harper)

It was slightly exciting; Harriet didn't make it because Woody fell over in the lorry and Steph got eliminated in the SJ, Jane had a couple of stops in the SJ. Not something I think any of them want reminding about! But I came tenth individually.

Showjumping isn't my favourite phase at the best of times, but this was terrifying. It wasn't big, there were just far too many options for my liking. Every single jump had the choice of an upright or a spread and just to add insult to injury, there were wooden dogs scattered around the course. Despite having to showjump in my XC tack, where I think we recorded the slowest SJ round thanks to the gag, we managed to go clear. The XC was very long and whilst I wasn't worried about Bea's fitness around the course, I did wonder if I would need a little break half way round!

Congrats to all who went to Aston – especially as many of them were then competing the next day at the Dressage Qualifier!

Dressage Qualifier – 6^th June at Hambledon (write-upp by Steph Read)

What a fab day we had, the weather was just right-not too hot nor too cold and the new venue seemed a hit!

We had another good year this year with team and individual placings(and a lot of new team members this year) always a little tricky to find you on the day when I've only communicated over email!!

The rural riders attracted quite an audience with most of the showground grinding to a halt to watch-even the paramedics showed an interest, and both judges said how good you all looked and how nerve wracking it was to judge- one even said "It was scarier than judging at the Europeans last year!" Few more practices before Lincoln and think we could be in with a fighting chance!

Special well done must go to Lucy who got a corker of a score in the riding test -88% and a sheet that deserves framing and hanging the wall with an incredible 18 9's and 6 8's-Well done Lucy-no pressure for the champs now!

The Rural Riders test by Bryony Harper

As some of you may be aware, we have been training to do the Rural Riders test, which is dressage for 6 horse and rider combinations, all in the arena at once. It has been brilliant fun and there aren't too many teams that take part, so the chance of a rosette is much higher! Although we were invited to compete at the Championships as we were the only team from area 6 to take part; forget long and complex qualifying competitions, this is the competition to do! However, as the reality of what we were throwing ourselves into began to dawn on us, we asked to have a practice run at the qualifying competition after all this was a higher standard of dressage than any of us were used to and we had to be in sync.

During our training, we have had lots of different changes to see what works best and much to my horror, I was moved to leading the group. This had its pros and cons; Bea discovered very quickly that if she was naughty or spooked, the repercussions were huge! Six horses all jumping and bucking at once, one laughing and the other five having no idea what was going on was highly entertaining, if perhaps less appropriate for the actual test. Another terrifying part of being the leader was that I had to not only learn the test, but ride it accurately. If I went wrong, there wasn’t a hope for anyone following. I had the definite advantage of not worrying about spacing between the horses, but this was offset by acting as the pacemaker for the group. If I went too slowly, or (more likely) too fast, everyone suffered. It’s this sort of stuff that keeps me awake at night.

Upon arrival at the competition, we busied ourselves with the important things in life; making sure we were all dressed the same. Perhaps we should have spent more time warming up and less time tying our stocks identically, but in this, appearance is everything. After rereading the test several times and dressing in the identical clothing, we were ready. It was time to warm up. Whenever we have practiced before, we have been in an arena and it hadn’t really occurred to us how difficult it would be without a marked out space to practice in. For a start, my spacial awareness is terrible; I couldn’t imagine a 20m x 60m area if it jumped up and smacked me in the face. So practicing our half ten metre circles and inclines in medium trot were absolutely impossible with me leading the gang. The harder I tried, the more mishapen and wonky my lines got.

I haven’t mentioned until now that the test itself is 14 minutes long and we were required to do all 14 minutes in sitting trot. Few of us compete at dressage to a high level, so sitting trot is somewhat alien to us and we had decided not to practice it too much until the day so as not to strain our horses backs. (Or that’s what we said anyway.) So with our bladders as empty as they could possibly be and our stomach muscles warned, we attempted that sacred sitting trot. It’s all very well to be able to do some sitting trot when schooling, but my muscles all seem to work against each other, becoming tenser and tenser as I attempt to breathe and look relaxed.

Finally it was time for the test. By this time, most of the people at the competition had gathered to watch our spectacle, (mostly because we looked so bizarre I think.) The two(!) dressage judges arrived and off we went trotting around the arena. We started off slowly (my muscles wouldn’t allow too much speed until they warmed up a little) and soon we were going down the centre line. There was no point being stressed or worrying about how it was going because I only knew what was happening to my horse. There were some exciting moments; most of us cantered across the first medium trot and down one long side we had a clash with the dressage markers, which each horse took great joy in kicking and jumping on. But on the whole, it was ok. I know I have areas to improve on (going backwards in the reinback for a start!) but there were some promising bits and we’ve had so much fun along the way. Lincoln, here we come!

A Note from the Chairman………….

The papagraph below is copied again from last month’s Bulleting, but PLEASE I do need those cups back NOW. I have had only 6 returned out of 42 and the show is only nine days away.

Open Show – Return of the Cups & Trophies please!

This is galloping up – one minute it is months away and the next it is nearly upon us. Those of you who won Cups and Trophies at last years show now need to return them to me please. If you haven’t got around to having them engraved yet, now is the time to get it done! We only award them to HWRC members now (due to having problems getting them back from non-members) but it often proves almost as difficult getting them back from our members!

Ann (James) has done a truly magnificent job getting so many lovely prizes from the various companies to present at our Open Show this year. She can hardly move in her lounge for all the boxes full of stuff! So do please make an effort to enter this year. It will be the one and only 21^st Birthday Show and we want to make it special for every competitor………especially our members.

We still need lots of helpers at the show, so please help us to help you….in other words, if we don’t have help, how can we keep putting on these shows and events for everyone’s enjoyment?

Most excellent news – Laura is recovering by leaps and bounds. I heard on the grapevine that, although she was not able to compete in the dressage pairs this year, as she had planned, Laura has every intention of competing in them in 2011! She is still in hospital, but now closer to home at Amersham, and her Mum Pauline has even loaded up Laura’s favourite horse and taken it to the hospital for Laura to see and give a cuddle to.

Summer seems to have finally arrived and the horses are now out 24 hours a day which means that I no longer have to get up quite so early and put them out. Our new horse is a really lovely chap but does not seem to like to drink from the trough! He is quite happy drinking out of a puddle or a bucket, feed bowl or even a small supplement container – but the trough no way! He watches the other horses slurping away but won’t quite get the courage up to actually put his nose in. Weird Irish horse – so I have to make sure that there a non-destructible buckets placed strategically in the field full of water so that he doesn’t get too thirsty (he always comes into his stable in the afternoon and there is always lots of water in there for him as well).

Area Novice, Intermediate and Open Horse Trials - Saturday 22^nd May at Snowball

The sun blazed down all day long but although the outside temperature rose significantly the temperature of the horses, riders and helpers remained cool and calm (however there was a continuous queue at the ice cream van all day long)!

112 horses and riders turned up and competed at this National Riding Club Qualifier with the first rider checking in with her passport at 7.30am with the last riders leaving Snowball Farm 12 hours later. None of this could have taken place without the dedication of Steph (Read) and her mum Julie, dad Mick, the riders, their grooms, and all the helpers from the competing clubs in Area 6.

The event was for teams of 4 and individuals, from Area 6, to compete against each other in the hopes of winning a place at the National Championships in August at Aston-le-Walls and had classes for both junior and senior riders. The results in some of the classes was so close that a recount was required and the final scores did not appear until after 7pm.

Riders – look after yourselves! – reproduced by kind permission of Bucks BHS

Sometimes horse riders don’t do themselves any favours on the road and endanger other road users, their horses and their own safety by not taking a few simple precautions or following a few simple rules:-

Always wear a riding helmet with the strap done up – remember it’s compulsory for under 14’s
Wear fluorescent or other bright clothing in daylight – you’ll be spotted sooner – put some fluorescent tape round your whip as well
Wear something reflective if you have to ride in very poor light or at night
If you have to ride at night or in poor visibility, make sure your horse has reflective bands above the fetlock joints and that you carry lights – white to the front and red to the rear
Make sure your tack, etc is in good condition before going on the road
Give clear arm signals before moving off or manoeuvring, keep over to the left hand side of the road
Always ride in single file on narrow roads or bend approaches
Don’t ride on footpaths, pavements or Redways
Tell someone at the yard – or write on a notice board – where you are going, what time you are leaving and when you expect to be back
Whenever possible take a mobile phone with you

A Note from the Chairman………….

As Ann has already written, we are all so pleased that Laura has now woken from her coma and she is getting stronger every day. It will be a while, obviously, before she is able to pick up the threads of her life but she has a wealth of love and support surrounding her. We hope she will be allowed home soon, but know that she is receiving the best care in hospital now.

Horse Trials Qualifier 22^nd May at Snowball Farm EC

This was the very first time that HWRC had run this event for the Area 6 Clubs and it was all down to Steph that it happened at all. I don’t know of too many people who would be prepared to take on such an enormous undertaking within two months of having their first baby, and riding in the event as well. That girl never ceases to amaze me! It was also an opportunity to meet young Lucas….what a beautiful baby and so good. I didn’t hear him cry or grizzle once, even though it was so terribly hot. I loved seeing his granddad, Mick, carrying him around, and his proud Dad, Paul, pushing him around in his pushchair. Me thinks we have one very spoilt baby here!! I am reliably informed he already has his first set of X-C colours…….a green babygrow with white stars going down the sleeves!! I dare say a 10” long pair of jods are soon to be seen too!

Both Steph and I have received some lovely e-mails from the other Clubs in Area 6, saying what a fab day they had had and how efficient and well run the event had been, and how nice and helpful all the various helpers had been too. That was the best news of all. So thank you to all the HWRC helpers, as well as other Clubs’ helpers. The open classes (the non-Area 6 Qualifier classes) didn’t have the entries we had hoped for but everyone agrees this is sadly a sign of the times. Lets hope the recession ends soon so that we can all get back to how things used to be.

BHS Events

The Showing Preparation for Horse and Rider day last Saturday, held at Radnage Livery & Eventing, was a superb day. Those who attended said they learned so much. Darren Blanchard of the Pferde Stud did a stunning presentation on the horse, even covering conformation defects and how to disguise them in the ring! Ginny Oakley covered the rider and showed how to tame wayward hair, fit a false bun, what shirts, ties and breeches to wear – and when to wear a stock and when not, what colour hats are correct (blue hat even with a green hacking jacket, not black!). If you weren’t there, you missed a great day. Many thanks to Sarah Metcalfe for organising the day and to the Guinea Pig horse, ponies and riders who came along.

There will be a Road Safety Awareness Evening on this coming Thursday, 10^th June, at BCA in the Manor House at the end of the long drive. This is to let people know what the Road Safety Test is all about and also just the training sessions, even if people don’t want to take the test. It starts at 7.30pm. Do come along on the evening. There will also be some free money-off vouchers to put towards training expenses.

Another Livery yard Owners & Managers Forum (7.15 for 7.30pm start) is being organised for 12^th August at the Home of Rest for Horses at Speen. This time, the subjects being covered will be Insurance issues for Yards, given by the MD of SEIB Insurance (who insure British Riding Clubs) , plus Risk Assessments, Fire Risks etc. We will also be having a Rug sale from 6.30pm – 3 rugs for £25. So please pass this information on to the owners/managers of your yards and tell them to put it on their calendar. Whilst I have a lot of the addresses from the last Forum held in December, I am also aware that I don’t know where ALL the yards are, so they may have missed out. About 65 people attended last time so I am sure there will be more this time.

Having a foot in both the Riding Club and British Horse Society camps, I do try and pass information on to our HWRC members about events being held by the BHS Bucks Committee. Three of the HWRC Committee Members, Alison Clayton, Sarah Metcalfe and myself, are also members of the BHS Bucks Committee, so please don’t think that you can’t attend the events. They are all open to anyone, BHS members or not. The events are intended for grass root riders to help and educate, so do come along.

Most of you will have heard about the serious accident that Laura (Salisbury) had at Rosehill last month. She is currently still in hospital but her condition is stable. Her parents are updating the committee regularly about her progress so please do not attempt to contact them or the hospital directly as all the information is posted on our website (www.highwycomberidingclub.co.uk).

I know you will all join me in offering our full support to her family and in wishing Laura a speedy recovery – I want to be able to put Laura’s name down again, soon, as one of our winning team members!

The Thames Valley Air Ambulance service is second to none and without their timely intervention it would have taken a lot longer for Laura to receive the specialist medical help that she desperately required. The Committee have agreed that we will fundraise for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance service at the Horse Trials later this month at Snowball Farm. In addition to this we will donate ALL the entry fees received from the Clear Round class at both the Open Show in July and the Junior Show in August.

Festival of the Horse – Hunter Trial Team Qualifier – 25^th April at Rosehill

Even though it was a very emotional and unsettling morning for the Club and the riders, HWRC went on to win the Senior Open Class and are now through to the Championships, at Aston le Walls, on 5^th and 6^th June. Well done to Harriet Coupland, Jane Adderley and Steph Read and good luck next month.

We also had a few good results with their Individual results in the Open class: Harriet came 3^rd, Jane 4^th and Steph 6^th. Our two Novice Teams were not placed but that was due to the incident in the morning. Well done to everyone who went along – whether riding, acting as groom or just lending support.

Rural Riders – What is it? by Bryony Harper

Throughout the spring a group of us began to do some Rural Rider training. None of us really knew what this entailed but we took plenty of enthusiasm with us!

The Rural Riders Dressage requires six horse and rider combinations to complete a dressage test together, in the same arena at the same time. To begin with, just riding around the arena nose to tail seemed challenging enough! It has been a great way to bring our horses back into work after the long winter because it almost doesn’t matter how your horse goes, it is a lot more important to work together as a team.

The whole thing has been brilliant fun as you have to ride by the seat of your pants and totally rely on your team mates to suceed.

After 5 or 6 sessions we are now a great team who have mastered leg yield and extended trot as a group. However we have yet to work out if we can complete a fourteen minute test in sitting trot without a tea break! No pressure though – we still have until the 6^th June to perfect our test……….

Rachael Wall is a McTimoney Chiropractor and has kindly sent the following case study.

Faneka (Fan) is a 23 year old Lusitano Stallion who in his time competed and won at Prix St Georges level dressage. He has been with his current owner for 19 years.

Three years ago Fan injured the suspensory ligament of his right hind leg which resulted in twelve months off work. Also of note in his medical history, Fan had keyhole surgery to remove bone fragments from his left knee 12 years ago. He can still become sore in this area which may have altered his gait over this period of time – it is not uncommon to observe issues on the diagonally opposite area of the body which could possibly have been a contributory factor to his suspensory ligament injury. This is because carpal soreness could result in a reluctance to extend the forelimb and as a result there will be a less forwards movement of the opposite hind limb these altered biomechanics will increase the stress on other structures over time.

Although Fan was on Bute, devils claw, and glucosamine when he was gradually brought back into work, his owner found that he was no longer enthusiastic for his work when he had always been more than willing, and that he would not stay sound, and as a result she was unable to ride him. Gill cut back on his work-load, tried massage and physiotherapists but to no avail. During this period after changing yards Gill heard about McTimoney Chiropractic and she decided to try this as she was at a stage where she felt that Fan was on borrowed time. He was unable to stay in work and is a horse that gets bored staying in the field longer than approximately 1½ hours. This meant that he was led out for grazing but spending the rest of his time in a stable.

In total Fan initially received four treatments spaced fortnightly at first, the interval was then lengthened. He now has maintenance treatments every four to six months to maintain his soundness. During the course of treatment I carried out a full McTimoney treatment which involves very fast and light adjustments these are often well tolerated and can even be relaxing. Fan’s predominant misalignments were focussed around his lower back and pelvis. Since treatment Fan has improved significantly to the point that he is now back in full work and even progressing his schooling to learning canter half pass and tempi changes at the grand age of 23! This demonstrates that there are occasions when the compensations for other problems and injuries can benefit from treatment even if other methods have not been successful, in order to take the pressure off areas that are overburdened.

There are other factors to take into account but often problems such as stiffness on one rein, difficulty striking off on the correct lead, an apparent reluctance to work or not be able to do things that your horse could do before etc are not always just a case of needing to do more schooling or your horse being difficult, but a symptom of mis-alignments that could be improved through treatment, remembering of course your horse may be mirroring your aches and pains/stiffness too!

A Note from the Chairman………….

Ann has already spoken about Laura (Salisbury) but I would just like to add that certainly few of us on the HWRC Committee seem to be able to stop thinking about her. I cannot imagine what her Mum and Dad – Pauline and Roger, together with sister Karen and brother Stephen, are going through. Their worry and distress is unimaginable. One thing that has amazed me is the sheer number of e-mails and text messages that I have received from the other Riding Clubs in Area 6. Everyone has been shocked to the core by this totally unforeseen accident and some have even asked to pledge a cash donation to buy something suitable for Laura as a get-well gift when she is up to receiving anything.

I cannot recall a time when there has been such activity from Area 6 Clubs in their messages of worry and support. I believe that it hit home all the more because Laura had the accident at an Area 6 Qualifier event when so many of the other Clubs were present. Riding Club people really are amongst the very best in the equestrian world.

The problem is, we all seem to be somehow all “on-hold” until we hear some good news and it’s hard to concentrate on the job in-hand, whatever that may be. Lets just hope we hear some good news soon.

I hope you will forgive the plug for these two events; they are both being organised by my BHS committee but are for everyone – Pony Club people, Riding Club people, those who belong to no organisation and of course, BHS members. I did send out the flyers to all our members and bookings are now coming in, but I would hate you all to forget they are on!!

We all have to ride on the roads, but do we do it safely? We all turn out our horses to the best of our ability for shows, but is this good enough to catch the Judge’s eye? Often the honest answer to both these questions is ‘NO’, which is why these two events are being organised.

Amazing – I am sitting typing away and the sun is shining once again! I have to admit I was not terribly impressed with the hail over Easter though and I am still wading through mud to poo-pick the fields but it has gone beyond the suck your wellies off to just being squelchy (and smelly).

It is still a time of indecision, for me at any rate, about which rug to turn my horses out in. Today is glorious and the unclipped one is naked but yesterday they were all rugged up and Bryan had on his warm pj’s (he can be such a baby). I tend to opt for them being slightly warmer rather than cold but then again I like my electric blanket on until almost mid-summer – so maybe it is just me!

The committee thought that it might be a really nice idea for 2011 to have a slim-line HWRC Calendar and that it would be even nicer if the 12 photos were of horses belonging to HWRC members. So, please look through your photos or start snapping and e-mail any (resolution of 300dpi) that you would like considered to Irene (theharper.family@tiscali.co.uk). All the photos submitted will then be judged (by an outsider) and the best 12 will be used in the 2011 calendar. You might even have a doggy one, for those who don’t now own horses of their own!

Rider/Sharer Wanted for Bryan – stabled just off M40 near junc 2

Bryan is a 15.1 dun Connemara x TB and loves to jump (he is affiliated), hack and whizz round xc courses (although he should have grown up by now as he will be 16 this year). He is not getting enough exercise and needs someone who’d love to take him to shows (but not dressage), hack him out or school him (our yard has an all-weather manege and separate lunge ring). The ideal person would be a teenager/light adult – he is not a novice ride and needs a very light touch. Bryan is really friendly, very handsome and almost loads himself into either a trailer or box.

A Note from the Chairman………….

First of all, many congratulations to Steph Read and her husband, Paul, on the birth of their first baby, a little boy they’ve names Lucas. He arrived on 17^th March weighing in at 7lbs 3oz. Amazingly, Steph even attended our Committee meeting on 6^th April and said she has already started back to work with her horses! Quite where that girl finds her energy and strong will from amazes me! Anyway, we wish this little family all the very best and I am sure that both sets of grandparents are absolutely thrilled and besotted.

Dressage Show 2^nd May - Cancelled

As Ann has already mentioned, the Dressage Show has had to be cancelled due to lack of time and an organiser. With the Horse Trials coming up on 22^nd May, which will need many hands-on helpers, it was just too much to contemplate. Those who have never organised a show might not realise just how much work goes into it, but believe me, it can be hard going.

Lets hope that the present lovely sunny weather isn’t just a flash in the pan, though I am still of a mind that we MAY get some more of the horrid stuff. Let’s hope I am wrong.

Well it is now March – the sun is shining, there is blue sky (quite a frost early this morning though) – but no rain/sleet/snow is forecast for at least the next 48 hours – is this Spring????

Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to wade through ankle deep mud that tries to either suck your wellies off or make you slip over when you are pushing a very heavy wheel-barrow. The crocuses are flowering and so the grass shouldn’t be too far behind ……. (fingers crossed).

Now comes the indecision of which rug to turn your nag out in and what pj’s he/she should be wearing at night – life is never easy when horses are involved! Let’s hope that with the April bulletin we are still enjoying better weather.

Please read the following message from Steph regarding this event:

“Not only have I taken on the almighty challenge of having a baby in 1 weeks time, I've also taken on the crazy task of organising the Area 6 Riding Club horse trials qualifer (all 3 heights) at Snowball Farm on Saturday May 22^nd! This is the qualifier for all the clubs in Area 6 (about 20 of them) for the National Championships in August.

This'll be the biggest competition I've ever organised on behalf of High Wycombe Riding Club and for myself. For once I'm being ultra-organised and am puting in a request for help now for the actual competition date of Sat 22nd May.

I'll need people to dressage write, sheet collect, help in the scorers tent, cross country jump judge, show jump arena party, help in the secretaries tent - the list is endless! If anybody can spare any time (even if just a couple of hours) it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance and please let me know asap over the next few weeks if you are able to help at all and which discipline (or any special talents) you'd prefer to help with i.e.dressage, show jumping, cross country,scores or secretarial. Annual Dog Show - 20^th February at Studley Green Community Hall

We ran this year’s Companion Dog Show on a Saturday for the first time ever, due to non-availability of the Hall on the Sunday. We found our entries to be down a little on previous years, but I am not sure if this was due to recession reasons or the fact it was on a Saturday and people sometimes work on Saturdays. We had a different judge this year, though she did judge for us once before about 10 years ago. She really enjoyed herself, she told us. As usual, we had a variety of different pooches and the Fancy Dress class was great fun to see. Katie Lester (Junior member) won a number of rosettes with her 4 dogs so she did very well. She even started to refuse the Highest Placed Member rosettes as she already had won a handful! Competitors came from Kent, Northampton, Cambridge, Newbury etc so we had some long distance travellers too and they all seemed to think it was well worth coming the distance. Everyone is always amazed that we give rosettes to 10^th place, for in Dog Show classes, they are usually to 4^th or 5^th at most. But we saw the first of the new “21^st Birthday” rosettes which looked very smart being awarded

We were delighted that Lyn Gritton (nee Brooks) did the lovely refreshments for us again; filled rolls, gorgeous home-made cakes and other goodies. Thank you to those who helped us again this year – Irene and Bryony Harper, Rachel Burger, Tracey Knock, Gill Hockley and also Elaine Barbour (Photographer) who took lots of photos and these can be seen on her website www.elainebarbourphotography.com

There was also a gentleman who took individual portrait photos of people and/or their dogs.

The Winter Dressage Qualifier – 21 February at Bury Farm, Slapton

There were three indoor arenas being used this year at this venue. A lot of people turned up late due to the sudden downturn in weather conditions, some didn’t arrive at all and some started out but turned back, so this must have been very difficult for Chalfont Heights Riding Club who hosted this year’s Qualifier. The roads were snowy and slippery, the outdoor warm-up arena was frozen hard and this was such as shame as the event had already been postponed from the original January date due to bad weather, so it had been hoped that the later date would have seen the better weather. We entered a Senior team comprising of Pauline Salisbury, Laura Salisbury, David Britnell and Kat Frew. David had a 2^nd and 5^th individually (well done, David) and his Mum, Dawn, very kindly stayed until the end so that she could get the results. We didn’t qualify this time but it’s very difficult so early in the year when the weather is bad and people find it hard to school their horses. Roll on the summer Dressage qualifiers!

A Note from the Chairman………….

I’m sorry to have missed seeing you all at our Team Information Evening, the first I have ever missed. However, I was chairing the Area 6 meeting on the same evening at BCA so I had to leave it to Ann (James) and Irene (Harper) to take over the reins for me. Just have never managed to work out how to cut myself in half! However, I understand it all went well.

Horse Vaccinations

I am pleased to report that British Riding Clubs (BRC) have now put a new facility on to their website; a Flu Vaccination Checker. You put the first date of the vaccination into the site and it tells you when the 2^nd and 3^rd vaccinations are due. I haven’t tried it myself but those who have, tell me it is very useful.

As we recently had some of our team members’ vaccination certificates “spun” (deemed incorrect and therefore disqualified) at the first Team Qualifiers held this year, our members may wish to use the new website facility to check their own certificates. I understand that one member got her Vet to check her certificate and he/she had told our member that it was all in order. May I just remind everyone that what is okay “health-wise” for a horse or pony may not fit the criteria of the Jockey Club Rules, which is what BRC run by. There is a very definite date regime of when vaccinations may be given. I have yet to find a Vet that truly understands how the Jockey Club and BRC Rules apply to Vaccination Certificates. So I regret I have to say that as far as this matter is concerned “don’t necessarily trust your Vet”. When members ‘borrow’ a horse to use for a Team Qualifier, they need to check the dates extremely carefully, as indeed they need to do if they have bought a new horse. The “incorrect” date might be way back some years ago so you need to check back to the very first vaccination date and check from there. For those who took a copy of the Team Information Booklet, I have written in there when the vaccination dates need to be given, but you can always check on the BRC website. Obviously, if you are riding in a Team, an incorrect Vaccination Certificate can disqualify the whole team or at best, leave them riding with only three team members.

The Winter Dressage Qualifier being hosted by Chalfont Heights RC at Bury Farm, Slapton is now on 21^st February.

Our Annual Dog Show will now take place at Studley Green Community Hall on Sunday 20^th. February

TVRC are hosting the Area Novice Indoor Show Jumping Qualifier at BCA on the 14^th February and our Team Evening is being held on Tuesday 23^rd February at Lane End Village Hall.

Early March brings a AmTrust /Royal Windsor Horse Show Round 1 Dressage Qualifier at Waylands EC – for further information contact Pauline Salisbury (07900 362937 or email her on roger.s44@virgin.net). At the end of the month (28^th) we will be holding the Round 2 Qualifiers for Top Score and Dressage Qualifiers at BCA.

This year the lucky winners of the AmTrust/Royal Windsor Horse Show Finals in May will be flying off to Lexington in Kentucky,USA to collect their prizes!.

Camp is confirmed from 23^rd to 25th April at Aston le Walls – contact Tracey Knock or Emma Marsden for further info.

On Sunday 2^nd May we will be holding a dressage show at Rosehill.

The Area Novice, Intermediate and Open Horse Trials will take place on Saturday 22^nd May at Snowball – please read the following message from Steph regarding this event:

“Not only have I taken on the almighty challenge of having a baby in 7 weeks time, I've also taken on the crazy task of organising the Area 6 Riding Club horse trials qualifer (all 3 heights) at Snowball Farm on Saturday May 22^nd! This is the qualifier for all the clubs in Area 6 (about 20 of them) for the National Championships in August.

This'll be the biggest competition I've ever organised on behalf of High Wycombe Riding Club and for myself. For once I'm being ultra-organised and am puting in a request for help now for the actual competition date of Sat 22nd May.

Genes - Friends Reunited for Horses

The social networking site MyPetYourPet.com brings together horse and pony owners throughout the world, allowing them to track the ancestors, relatives and offspring of their own horse or pony. It uses a unique search facility to automatically download an interactive equine family tree that provides up-to-date details, photographs and video of horse and pony relatives. MyPetYourPet also allows previous owners and breeders to trace the progress of a horse or pony they have sold or re-homed.

Since its launch in late 2009 the website has really taken off and there is now a large and daily growing community of horsey people from all corners of the world awaiting information about horses or ponies they once owned or about relatives of their current horse or pony.

For example we have a young member who is ‘trying desperately to find out what has become of my darling Buffy’. If you and your fellow club members join them, not only will you get to meet the relatives of your own horses and ponies, or to trace an animal you once knew but lost touch with, but you’ll be helping others do exactly the same thing. A Note from the Chairman………….

Our winter wonderland!

Everyone has had a real trial since just before Christmas, trying to make sure their horses have been kept warm, fed and watered, as well as trying to get to work with all the snow on the roads. The beauty of the winter wonderland soon paled when it became so difficult to manage our normal daily chores and work. I think we may even have some more snow to deal with before we can truly put winter behind us.

I’m old enough to remember the winter of 1962/3 when I had a mare and foal to deal with that were kept outside (we did that in those days!) and I had to carry buckets full of boiling water several times a day to tip into their frozen water trough and trudge through the deep, deep snow with a full bale of hay on my back. The snow was so deep then that I was actually walking on top of the hedges as the snow had drifted so much it had filled up the lane – so you didn’t know quite where you were walking! The mare was a New Forest so was truly hardy and scraped away the snow to find the grass underneath for herself and her 8 month old foal. Neither suffered in any way at all, didn’t lose weight and had glossy coats!

I was 14½ at the time and working at home on my father’s farm. The lambs were being born and were freezing to the ground before their mothers could get up on their feet and begin licking them. We had to be there all the time to get them dried off with towels and on their feet to save their lives – night and day. I didn’t see my bed for 2-3 weeks as I slept on the floor in front of the Aga in the farm kitchen fully dressed, and snatched odd hours of sleep when I could. The cows still had to be milked twice a day and all the animals fed. My mother had various poorly lambs in the ovens and plate warmers of the Aga, and we had a variety of cardboard boxes in front each housing poorly newborns. A teaspoonful of Brandy often gave them the kick-start they needed to live, but if you gave the same to newborn piglets, it could kill them!

The packed down snow and ice didn’t go until well into April. I had to wear a brace plate on my teeth at that time which I truly hated, and I used to take it out whenever my Mum wasn’t around and put it into my pocket. I must have pulled it out with my hankie at one time and I lost it. I got into real hot water for that and no one could find it anywhere. When the snow and ice finally melted in the farm yard a couple of months later, there was my brace, wedged between two of the cobble stones. The milk lorry had come every morning to collect the milk churns and must have run over it every single day, but being between the cobbles it had been protected! Sadly, after a good scrubbing, my Mum made me put it back in my mouth. My teeth had realigned themselves during the weeks I hadn’t worn the brace so the wretched thing hurt more than ever!

HWRC 21^st Birthday

As mentioned in the last Newsletter, our 21^st Birthday is this year. We have booked the date of our “party” for 12^th June. We aim to have a “Black & White” theme as those are the Club’s colours. We would like all old members of the Club as well as current members to come, so if you know of anyone who used to be a member but no longer is, for any reason, then please would you pass on the word? A long-time member of the Club recently dropped off to me the first ever HWRC Fixtures List which she had still kept! It proved extremely interesting and made me wonder how on earth we found the energy to run an event every fortnight that first year of existance! Where did all our energy go???

Addams Caterers

Many of you will know Denis Day, of Addams Mobile Caterers. Denis provides the burger vans for not only our shows but many others in the area too. Although he doesn’t always manage to get to the shows himself now, he’s often on the phone to make sure all is going okay on the day. Well, Denis will be 90 years old on 28^th February this year. Actually, Denis was a Leap Year baby (born on 29^th Feb) so he only gets a proper birthday every 4 years. He has always shown a special interest in High Wycombe Riding Club, even though for many, many years he WAS “Mr Wooburn Saddle Club”, now folded. Denis is interested in the fact we are now 21 years old and is keen to “do something for us” to help us celebrate our birthday. He’s left it up to me to decide what he should do, and I’m struggling a bit with that thought! If you have any ideas, do let me have them please.

Safeguarding and Protecting Children

Now that all affiliated Riding Clubs have to have at least one person on their Committees who has taken the Child Protection Course, now newly named as above, we now have two in HWRC. I took the course last June and recently, Sally Blackman (new on our Committee) also took the course. So hopefully, either Sally or myself will be in attendance at most of our events.

High Wycombe Riding Club Calendar

Something that the Committee has come up with is to have a Club Calendar with each month bearing a coloured photo of one/some of our members with their horses/dogs. It was a pity that we didn’t think of this before so that it could have been produced for our Anniversary year. However, we will organise a Photo Competition where we are asking members to send in their photos where the best will be picked by the Committee to grace the calendar for January through to December 2011. You certainly should have some piccies of your horses or dogs (or both) in the recent snow which would suit the Dec / January months!

Additional Events

Some of you have been sending in some ideas for additional events for this coming year with your renewal cheques. Many, many thanks for these. We’ll be looking at them and seeing if we can add them to our existing dates. One is a Picnic Ride and I have asked one of our members if she could devise a route for us. If this all comes to fruition, then we will let everyone know via e-mail and the News Bulletins. We’re always looking for new (or revised) things to organise for our members so if you have other ideas, please keep them coming.

Bounced Entry Cheques

Sadly we seem to be getting these more and more recently. Probably a result of the recession and people not managing their budgets as well as they might. Thankfully, they’re mostly from non-members of our Club. But it takes time and trouble to write to these people and endeavour to get the money, and even then we don’t always manage to get it. A sad sign of the times, I fear.

Future Events …..

Although the fixture list hasn’t and printed yet I have listed below some of the fantastic things we have planned for the first half of 2010.

There is a Winter Dressage Qualifier being hosted by Chalfont Heights RC at Slapton on 17^th January, then in February we will be holding our Annual Dog Show hopefully on Sunday 7^th, TVRC are hosting a Show Jumping Qualifier at BCA on the 14^th and our not to be missed Team Evening is planned for 25^th at Lane End Village Hall.

Early March brings a Round 1 Dressage Qualifier and at the end of the month will be the Round 2 Top Score and Dressage Qualifiers for Royal Windsor Horse Show in May (this year the winners will be going to Lexington in Kentucky to collect their prizes!).

Camp is planned for April and so is the Liaison Trophy Competition and then in May we will be offering a dressage show to be held at Rosehill and there will also be Novice Horse Trials at Snowball.

In June Chiltern RC are hosting a Dressage Qualifier at Hambledon, there will be an Open Horse Trials Qualifier (venue tba) and HWRC are having a 21^st Birthday Party to which all our members are invited!

Fuller details of these, and other, events will be sent out to our members shortly and, of course, you will be able to see them in future Newsletters and on-line.

HWRC Training

A Jumping Lesson with Jane Adderley – by Jess Coupland

I had a joint lesson with Keira Bentley and her friend who brought along a couple of young/inexperienced horses and I brought my older horse along for a bit of a jolly!

It was a great experience for the youngsters who had to work in around the other horses and they started jumping some small fences and then went on to complete a small course.

I really enjoyed the lesson as I got the chance to practice my accuracy by jumping some skinny fences and jumps at various angles.

I would thoroughly recommend the experience to anyone regardless of age/experience as it was great fun and confidence building.

I have recently moved to S Bucks from Kent and joined HWRC. I am looking for a horse to either have on loan or to buy and I already have a box reserved at Widmer Equestrian Centre in Lacey Green!

I’ve previously owned all sorts – from 15.2 to 17.1 / Warmbloods to Welsh Sec D’s – and I’ve competed up to elementary level BD, jumped in affiliated BSJA competitions and was training for BE but I am not so brave on a XC course.

A Note from the Chairman………….

As Ann has already said, a Very Happy New Year to you all.

We are in for some very cold weather, I think, over the next few weeks! Having been stranded on 21^st December in the grid locked roads in the snow for 7 ½ hours and getting home (from work) at 1am in the morning (like many other people, I gather) I am for once glad that I now don’t have any horses to care for. There’s so much to remember to do at this time of year and checking your horses twice or more times a day is even more important than usual.

Making sure you have enough horse feed and hay (for those who have their horses in other than Livery), in stock in case of running out, making sure you pick out their feet to remove the balls of packed snow, breaking the ice on their water troughs many times a day, (they seem to drink even more water in the cold weather!) making sure their rugs are warm enough and are adjusted every time you visit your horse to prevent rubbing, putting salt down in the concrete areas your horse has to walk over to prevent slipping…..the list goes on and on. Adding things like carrots to their feeds also helps to maintain condition when they are unable to get it from grass – cut lengthways, not in cubed/chunks in case of choking. It’s hard to keep condition and fitness levels up in this weather so the early Qualifier competitions may have added problems.

We are currently busy trying to book venues etc for our forthcoming events and are girding our loins for the number who will have increased their hire rates this year. Sadly, not many are sticking to last year’s fees, even in these restrained times, but we will do our very best to absorb many of the increases.

When you send Ann your Renewal Subscriptions, if any of our Junior members have reached the age of 18 years, please let us know as we need to remove them from the Junior Membership list and transfer them to the Seniors list. This is particularly important if they are interested in Teams.

HWRC’s 21^st Birthday

We have decided that our Rosettes will bear 21^st Birthday on the tails this year, to celebrate our 21 years. We also asked for photos of any members. So please don’t forget to let me have any that you have on your PC’s please. We may have other ideas to impart regarding our special Birthday year, so watch this space!! Any ideas YOU might have, please let me know!

Livery Yard Owners & Managers Forum

I have mentioned before that the BHS in Bucks has organised this Forum for all those who run Livery Yards. It is free to all comers and will be held on 8^th December 2009 7.30pm at The Horse Trust, Speen Rest Home for Horses. Please would you either let me know the address of your yards or where you keep your horses, so that I can send the owner/manager an invitation? It is for ALL yards, not just those who keep a lot of horses or are BHS Approved yards. There are loads of yards tucked around the area who don’t advertise etc, but they could be just as easily sued by a disgruntled client as the big ones who do advertise. So it is in their own best interests to attend. Please pass on this message.

What looked like a slow start to the show was soon dispelled – the rain and wind did not stop riders turning up to take part in this show – it was so popular (especially the Intermediate class) that we had to close the class and couldn’t accept any further entries. Open Indoor Hunter Trials – 29 November at BCA

Who would have thought that there were so many riders in South Bucks/Oxon wanting to take part in an Indoor Hunter Trial – the response was fantastic. The first rider went at 9.00 am and the last rider went at 6.45 pm and apart from course changes there were no breaks!

A HUGE thank you this time to Steph (Read) who orchestrated the whole show from a hospital bed armed with nothing more that a mobile phone, pad, pen and willing parents! Thank you also to her parents, Julie and Mick Rainer for being Steph’s right-hand men.

It was an amazing show, incredibly wet and cold (the rider’s numbers were turning to sludge by about 11.30!) but the turn-out was fantastic and hardly anyone cancelled their classes. So hats off to everyone who took part: this includes the riding club helpers, the grooms, the drivers and of course the riders themselves.

A Note from the Chairman………….

The last few weeks have been pretty hectic, organising not one, but two jumping events at BCA! As Ann has said, both were a huge success and I have received phone calls from people saying how much they enjoyed the events….especially the Indoor Hunter trial last Sunday. Now we have finished all our events for 2009, it is time to plan the ones for 2010 and the Committee will be meeting on 7^th December to see what we can put together for next year. Then it will all start all over again!!

We are nearly 21 years old!

I’m sure not many members realise but in 2010 we will be twenty one years old! I can hardly believe it myself! It hardly seems any time at all that the late Maddy McKenzie-Wallace and I sat at my kitchen table talking about starting a new Riding Club in this area and one that would cater for ALL levels of horse and rider. We planned that all our rosettes would go to 10^th place, that they would be lovely rosettes too, and that we would hold Open Shows, Hunter Trials and lots of training for everyone. In those days we were only allowed to take adults over the age of 17 years, never imagining that British Riding Clubs would eventually allow Clubs to take Junior riders! Maddy would be delighted, were she still with us, to know that we could have young people as well as she was a hugely favourite Instructor at Pony Club Camp.

Very sadly, Maddy died nearly 18 years ago from Cancer, shortly after my own mother who died of the same dreaded disease, but she will never be forgotten and I like to think that she is up there now, looking down on us and being happy that we have, as a Club, come so far in the intervening years. Maddy was a brilliant and innovative Instructor who got us all doing things and attempting higher fences than we ever thought we were capable of doing! She was one of those people who truly multi-tasked……when we ran our Camps, she would cook the breakfasts for everyone, then wash up, then be out on the X-C course ready to do a morning’s teaching. Come lunchtime, when everyone was seeing to their horses, Maddy would be preparing the lunch for everyone (and I’m talking about 30 people here) and would be ready to teach the afternoon groups after lunch. She never got stressed and believed in the mantra “it’ll all be alright on the day”. She used to say that I did enough stressing for the both of us, as I was the one running round with lists and making sure everyone had everything they needed! She used to say “Jan makes lists of lists, then more lists of lists” but we worked well together and everything would come together in the end, just as she’d say it would.

It was a privilege to work with Maddy and to start this wonderful Club of ours together. Our first Chairman was Seddon Cripps, who is now our President – Lord Parmoor. He stuck it for a year, bless him, then I was pushed into post. I had been Chairman of another local Riding Club for about 14 years and said I would never do it again, but yes, well!! 20-odd years later and here I still am!

Celebrations!

But we want to do something great to celebrate our 21 years of existance and one of the things I would like would be to gather together some of the photos taken over the years of our members doing what they do best….having fun with their horses. We can probably do a photo slide show at our AGM next October, which would be great fun. So, if you have some photos that you can send me anytime between now and next September, then please do. I can then work on putting the whole thing together…. Or rather, my genius of a son can!!

I spoke to Seddon only last week about what we should do in the way of celebrations and he has given me some ideas…….. a 21^st Birthday Party, a comemorative mug, a piece of clothing with dates/logo etc, a dinner, a dance – so lots to think about. If YOU have some ideas to add to the mix, please let me have them very soon so that the Committee and I can mull over what we can best organise next year.

Christmas and New Year

I would like to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a great New Year. Some of you may be partying like mad whilst others will take a much needed break, eating too much food and enjoying far too much good wine!! Me? I’m just looking forward to some lie-ins. At the moment I don’t have any judging appointments over the festive break, which is a first, so I hope it stays that way! Many events have been cancelled that were coming up, due to various reasons, so I hope that all our neighbouring Clubs and organisations that have suffered over the last few months will have a much better time in 2010. HWRC have indeed been extremely lucky this year – and long may it continue.

Congratulations are in order once again, but this time due to the arrival of a baby boy! Rachel (O’Neill)

gave birth to Ethan (10lbs 3oz) on October 29^th – our best wishes go to you, Tony & the baby and hope to see you back in the saddle in time for next year’s dressage team events! Another recent new arrival was another baby boy, born to Laura Henderson, in September. Weighing in at 7lbs 15oz, the baby is called Archie and Lyn Gritton (nee Brooks) is a very proud Grandma!!

Also in the news – the latest copy of Chiltern & Thames Rider magazine features 6 fabulous photos of the recent Hunter Trials held at Rosehill in September (on page 52). If you see anything about the club in print – then please let me know so that it can be shared with all the members.

Membership: in the past, November is the time that we would be asking you to hand over your hard-earned money for your membership subscription. However from now on the membership year will run 1 January to 31 December and so subscriptions will be due on or before 1 January 2010. A copy of the 2010 membership application form is attached to this bulletin (and can also be found on our website). Please let me have the completed forms and cheques back in good time so that your membership does not get delayed. For those that have joined since the Open Show in July then your subs are good through to the end of 2010. If you don’t rejoin, then of course, not only will you not receive the News Bulletins any longer, but you also won’t receive copies of Rider magazine direct from BRC at Stoneleigh.

BHS Gold Membership – the special offer for Gold membership runs out next month. I am one of those that could not see why I needed to join them – after all I was a member of the BRC so why join the BHS as well! But – by joining them I am saving myself over £140.00 per year with two horses (less the joining fee!) as they include FREE 3^rd party liability insurance for all the horses that you own (you also get a nice gold and blue badge). So, think about it, save some money and treat yourself to something special in time for Christmas with the extra dosh! You can join simply by ringing the BHS, or by asking for a Membership Application Form (Jan Eedle-Wells has plenty!)

Not a huge turnout this year but there was a fire on the West Wycombe Road and so the committee realised that the members that did not attend were obviously stuck on the A40! You missed an interesting evening and unlimited warm drinks and nibbles.

A Note from the Chairman………….

Ann has already mentioned the recent AGM, held in October. It was a pity that numbers were down this year, but I think the fire was a good reason. I still have quite a few Team Awards for members who didn’t come to the AGM to be presented with them! Amazingly, we still have people saying that they aren’t aware that if they ride in a HWRC Team during the year, they receive a medal or award at the AGM! I’m not sure how many times we have to tell people for them to realise!!! Anyway, the following people are still to collect from me (maybe if they contact me, we can take them to the forthcoming Indoor Show Jumping or Indoor Hunter Trials for them to collect there).

We lost some members of the Committee this time – Rebecca Brown, Kiera Bentley, Emma Marsden and Nicola Gillespie, and thank them greatly for all the help they have been to the Club whilst on the Committee. Emma is still looking after our Website for us so is still in close contact. We presented them all with leaving gifts and feedback has shown that they were pleased with their goodies!

We warmly welcome three new members to the Committee, namely Sally Blackman, Jacqui Roehrig and Gill Hockley and I am sure they will soon get to grips with the way the Committee and the Club work when seeing it from the inside! We will soon be sitting down to plan our Fixtures for 2010 so if you would like any event in particular to be arranged, then now is the time to contact us, please.

I’m extremely sorry everyone has had to wait for the schedules for the forthcoming Indoor Shows at BCA (show jumping on 22^nd Nov and Hunter Trials on 29^th Nov) but I have a suspected slipped disc and haven’t been able to climb the stairs to my PC to get these done. The Doctor has now prescribed some fearsome drugs to help me get upright again but unfortunately, I am not able to drive with them. I’ve had 2 weeks of agony and tried to plough on, but the pain finally got me. Fortunately my bedroom is on the ground floor and the WC too, so somehow I have managed. But it finally got me and dragged me to my knees. I already have two inoperable slipped discs in my back so really could do without a third!! Upon opening my e-mails today I see many from people who have been trying to contact me about the schedules, but I haven’t been able to see them. I’m truly sorry.

Livery Yard Owners & Managers Forum

I have mentioned before that the BHS in Bucks has organised this Forum for all those who run Livery Yards. It is free to all comers and will be held on 8^th December 2009 at The Horse Trust, Speen Rest Home for Horses. Please would you either let me know the address of your yards or where you keep your horses, so that I can send the owner/manager an invitation? It is for ALL yards, not just those who keep a lot of horses or are BHS Approved yards. There are loads of yards tucked around the area who don’t advertise etc, but they could be just as easily sued by a disgruntled client as the big ones who do advertise. So it is in their own best interests to attend. Please pass on this message.

What a month September proved to be! The HWRC Novice Dressage Team came 3^rd at Lincoln and individually Bryony Harper came 2^nd, Pauline Salisbury came 4^th, Emma Marsden came 7^th and Lesley Long came 12^th! Well done to everyone who attended – either competing, acting as groom and mucker-outer, gofer or just friend! Full details can be found in this Bulletin.

And congratulations to Jan who graduated at the beginning of September with a Foundation Degree in Community Development!

Festival of the Hunter Qualifier – Snowball Farm

Open Hunter Trials – 20^th Sept at Rosehill

What an amazing day – blue sky, sunshine and smiling faces. Luckily the ground at Rosehill had enough grass covering it so that it wasn’t like concrete and the event was able to go ahead as planned (unlike Snowball’s event which had been planned for the previous day). The course was slightly different this year – there are some new jumps, steps, a bridge and other interesting obstacles – and the riders rode the course back-to-front. So, instead of jump two and then across the road and down the track, the competitors had to proceed either into the woods (2’3” and 2’6”) or across the back of the main field and then into the field with the steps! The comments I heard from those walking the course indicated that most riders thought it was a great idea as it made the event different and exciting! No-one got lost on the day and the concensus was that it had been a ‘jolly good day’. Well done Anne (Belbin) for organising the Hunter Trials with very few hiccups.

Lincoln - by Lucy Chappell

It must have been the first time I have been to Lincoln and the sun has shone for the whole weekend – makes a real difference when you aren’t dripping wet the whole time and trying to keep the horses mud free!

The Novice Dressage Team consisted of Bryony Harper on Waterton heights; Pauline Salisbury on Dunnamon; Emma Marsden on Paddy;s Promise and Lesley Long on Bailey. The results were the Team came 3^rd and Bryony 2^nd with 76.25% (amazing performance); Pauline 4^th with 68.75% (gob smacked!); Emma 7^th with 67.92% (v surprised as he was fly-bucking beforehand) and Lesley 12^th with 64.58%.

Open Dressage Team: Jane Adderley; Bryony on Waterton Heights; Lucy Chappell (me) on Josh II and Laura Salisbury on Sitarswood Senator. The Team came 12^th and individually I came 4^th.

Pairs Dressage: Our (me and Laura Salisbury) first year. It was great fun and our horses went really well together and we ended up with a respectable 8^th placing.

Individual Riding Test (7): I came 6^th on Josh II with 68%.

Show Jumping: After the 2^nd round the team had finished with 12 faults and unfortunately we were not placed.

Roll on next year and we’ll try for more of the red rosettes!

A Note from the Chairman………….

First of all, I must apologise for the lateness in sending out this October News Bulletin to you all. I see I have already missed some of Pauline’s Training Dates….she’ll be very cross with me, I am sure. However, as my youngest son has been home from Australia, I have taken a brief ‘holiday’ from my computer and haven’t even turned it on for 10 days. Hence why I have just answered 141 e-mails! We are all so attached to our PC’s these days – like we are to our Mobile phones – that if you don’t use them for a while, you find you really have missed the boat. So again, my apologies to all.

Secondly, I was truly amazed to see my photo appear on the first page of this News Bulletin! How Ann (James) got hold of it I have no idea! My first thought was to delete it….who wants to see my ugly mug on opening the Bulletin! Then I decided to leave it as Ann obviously wanted it there! Yes, I have been doing a Degree for the last 2 years, as well as working full time, family commitments, horse shows and judging. It was, as many of you who have also taken this step will know, extremely difficult at times to cope with it all, but sometimes you just have to get that little pocket of willpower out and trudge onwards if you want to achieve something important to you. My husband wants to know when I am going to go for my Masters…….but I won’t tell you what I told him!!!!!

Horses for Heroes

HorsePower Ltd are organising a Horses for Heroes event next July when they are organising a Sponsored Ride on 10^th July that will start at Ascot Racecourse, go around Windsor Great Park, and finish at the Racecourse in time for the afternoon races to begin. They want to get 2010 horses and riders taking part (2010 horses to match the year 2010) and the proceeds will go to all those service men and women who are coming home badly injured from Afganistan. Planning is in the early stages at the moment but talk is that each entrant will get a rosette and a goodie bag just for starters. More details will follow when I have them.

Qualifier Dates for 2010

The Riding Clubs in Area 6 are pulling together the dates and venues for next year’s qualifier competitions in Dressage, Show Jumping, Hunter Trials, Horse Trials and Dressage to Music. The first one that we know of with certanty is the Winter Dressage which will be held indoors at Bury Farm, Slapton, on 17^th January 2010. So if you are interested, do contact Steph Read (Dressage Team Manager) to let her know you would like to be considered.

Babies!!

Talking of Steph Read (nee Rainer), for those who don’t already know, Steph and her husband Paul are expecting their first baby, due next February. It’s all very exciting, but in true Steph style, she is carrying on pretty much as normal and still competing! Also expecting is Suzy Turner, Chairman of Wokingham & Bearwood RC (W & B), so it will be a race to the finish for these two to see who gets there first!

Horse Trials Qualifier

Steph has decided that, as Wokingham & Bearwood RC don’t want to run the Horse Trials Qualifier next year at Tweseldown, we in HWRC will run it! This will mean that we won’t run the Show Jumping next year as Clubs can’t run two qualifiers, but W & B will run that instead. We don’t know where the two venues will be yet but we’ll let you know when we know. Steph is sure she will manage to run the HT as well as having a Baby Read in tow. I just wish I had her energy!

Riding Club Survey

We hope to have the results of the Riding Club Survey by November, so it will be interesting to see how the Area 6 Clubs are coping with the current recession. Competitor numbers have definitely been down this year, and some events have been cancelled due to not having enough helpers to run them. But we hope next year will see a return of some of these events and shows. Riders need these events and shows in order to get their horses out, though the eventers have had a better time as there have been few balloting out due to low entry numbers.

AGM

Ann has already mentioned the AGM coming up on 20^th October. We have a few resignations this time so are looking for people with a can-do attitude who would like to join us on the Committee to take our very successful Club into 2010. We are second largest in Area 6 and have learned that people wish to join our Club because we still provide the variation that people look for. Long may that continue! So if you would like to find out what being on the Committee means, do either ring me (01494-882041 or 07966-276690) or e-mail me and I will fill you in. We hold monthly meetings at my house between Wheeler End and Lane End and I’m told that the biscuits are scrummy! So we’d love you to join us.

Open Horse Show – 19^th July at Black Barn Farm

Classes to suit every age in jumping and showing and an all day clear round. This show will include the Chiltern & Thames Rider Qualifiers and RWHS Unaffiliated first round Top Score qualifiers for 2010. Rosettes, as always, to 10^th place (cups & trophies to HWRC members only).

This year we will be having trade stands at the show, so come along and be prepared to browse and buy and eat! Also on the menu for the day will be burgers, hot dogs and Italian Ices (courtesy of Rosetti Ices).

We are lucky to have sponsorship for some of our classes from Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre, Penn Equine Feed & Tack, Patches Equestrian, Ellen’s Saddlery, Rosetti Ices, Kingsmead Equestrian and South Bucks RSPCA.

Schedules will be available on-line (www.highwycomberidingclub.co.uk) and from the usual outlets closer to the date. Help will be needed for setting up on the 18^th, and on the Sunday at the show and also to help clear up afterwards! Junior Open Show & Gymkhana – 23^rd August at Black Barn Farm

This show is for those 17 years and under and includes all the favourites and for the first time Gymkhana classes as well. Rosettes to 10^th place and prizes for the winners. You do not need to be a member of HWRC to enter. There will also be the chance to enter the 2010 RWHS Unaffiliated Championship round 1 qualifier at both the Open and Junior Shows – your chance to qualify for the Royal Windsor Championship.

Become a sponsor of one of the classes and you will be listed in the schedule alongside your chosen class. Schedules will be available on-line and from the usual outlets. Any queries or offers of help in setting up or on the day, contact Ann 0n 01494 52018.

Liaison Trophy Competition - 24^th May at BCA

We were very pleased that the Liaison Trophy was able to be run this year, having to cancel it in 2008 due to lack of helpers. Getting team members for HWRC seemed more difficult this year than previously. Maybe many of our riders have moved up the scales and now find themselves too qualified to ride at the Liaison Trophy level? This is obviously very gratifying in one way, but it did cause some problems getting enough people to fill the four teams in Dressage, Show Jumping, Cross Country and Roads & Tracks. Although we did pick up some rosettes in the different disciplines, we didn’t win the Cup this year – the overall winners being Wokingham & Bearwood RC. But there’s always next year! Many thanks to Kiera Bentley and Emma Marsden for being Team Managers on the day and to all the members who rode in our teams. We hope those who did take part had a great day.

BBQ – 31^st May at Black Barn Farm

A few hardy souls turned up complete with sun block as it seemed to be the hottest day of the year. Thank you to everyone who did put in an appearance and special thanks to everyone who volunteered to move the jumps from Widmer to Black Barn Farm – some I know spent what seemed like the whole weekend shifting jumps and poles from one place to another! Also special thanks to Chris (Bayliss) and Sarah (Metcalfe) who went above and beyond the call of duty! Chris was busy topping the grass on Sunday so that Jan could put the rings up before the jumps were unloaded.

FANTASTIC RIDING CLUB HORSE TO SHARE/LOAN.

16.1hh handsome dark bay gelding, 14 years old, excellent temperament both inside and outside the stable. Has competed at intermediate level under British Eventing rules. Good schoolmaster; opportunity to compete at and participate in riding club/pony club activities immediately; excellent to hack on own and in company. Must remain at current private professional yard where he is stabled on part-livery. The yard has excellent facilities and is based in Moss End, Warfield.

I am looking for a competent rider to share half the costs of his keep, riding and enjoyment; there could be an opportunity to take him on full loan for the summer.

A Note from the Chairman………….

The heat seems to be on now regarding event organising! It was a rush to get everything ready for our first event at Black Barn Farm where we hosted the Show Jumping Area Qualifiers this last Sunday, 7^th June. After torrential rain on the Saturday and early Sunday morning, I was worried as to how the ground would stand up, but the rain stopped at 9am and the sun came out shortly afterwards, giving us a really lovely day. Some riders didn’t turn up on the day, especially the HWRC Juniors, as they obviously thought they would be in for a soaking! But everyone had a great day in the end. Sadly, when we enter Team Competitions, it costs quite a lot of money to enter and we don’t get a refund when riders don’t turn up. But hopefully, our Juniors won’t be so easily put off another time if the weather doesn’t look so good first thing. They would probably have qualified for the Championships too, as there were very few Junior teams competing on Sunday (only two, in fact).

The riders who came from the other Area 6 Clubs were very complimentary about our new showground venue at Black Barn Farm, saying it was “fantastic” and a “really beautiful setting” so this has given us confidence for our forthcoming shows that will be held there. The ground really held well and the BSJA Judges and the Course Builder said it couldn’t have been better.

HWRC did well, winning the Area Open Dressage Team qualifier, coming second in the Area Novice Dressage Team and third in the Area Senior Riding Test. In the Show Jumping, we won the Area Novice Team and Pauline Salisbury also won the Individual placing. As Ann has said earlier in this newsletter, the full results and names of team members etc will be in the July edition. Congratulations to all our members who took part in both the Dressage and the Show Jumping.

Safeguarding & Protecting Children Course

British Riding Clubs have notified all Riding Clubs in the UK they we must now have one or more people on their Committees who have competed the above course (the new name for the Child Protection Courses) in their Club if they hold any events where children will be present, either competing or as spectators, and also, if they have a Junior membership. I have organised a BHS-run Course this Saturday 13^th June and both Sarah Metcalfe and myself will be attending the Course for HWRC. This will mean that we have complied with this new BRC ruling.

Helpers at events

I do understand that it can be a bind having to help set up shows, or help on the day of events. Many of us work full time and want time to play with our horses as well as having some home-life and social time as well when we are not at work. As a full time worker myself, I know only too well what it’s like and I for one really value free weekends. But if more people offered occasionally, then the workload could be equalled out amongst the many instead of the same old few having to do it all.

If only you knew how fantastic it is to have people to help out, and how gut-wrenching it is to be the only ones trying to do it all, then I am sure you would understand. So many Clubs and other organisations have closed down across the UK due solely to lack of helpers, and we would hate to see that happen to our Club. So please, if you can lend a hand for a few hours at the shows coming up, we would be so grateful.

Open Show 2008 CUP WINNERS

At last year’s show, we only gave the cups and trophies to HWRC Club Members, as we have had so many problems in the past trying to get the cups returned in time for the shows from non members who compete at our Open shows. It was a hard decision to make as we have some beautiful Cups and trophies and this is one of the reasons why our shows have such a good reputation. But having to drive to Northampton (or even Devon once) in the past to retrieve our silverware, the decision to give to members only made the decision for us.

So….if you won one or some Cups at last year’s Open Show, perhaps now is the time to get the engraving done on them if you haven’t done that already, and arrange to return the Cups to me (Jan Eedle-Wells) please by end of June. The Committee felt sure we would have no problems getting the cups back from members………. so please endorse their view!!

Help with your horse

As mentioned in the last News Bulletin, in September, there will be a Spook Busting & Problem Solving Day at Pyatts Farm, Lane End in their large arena. The sessions will be taken by a Police Horse Trainer and aim to help people with the problems they may have with their horses. Sessions can be booked for individuals for half an hour or in pairs for one hour. If anyone is interested in booking a space, please contact me (Jan Eedle-Wells) for a Booking Form. Recently the BHS held a similar day with Monty Roberts and Kelly Marks at Waterstock for BHS Registered Instructors. From those who took their own horses along as Guinea Pigs, they said it was a fabulous day and got a great deal from it. This will be a similar day……..for much less than the cost to organise that day with Monty!!
